Sometimes, what starts as a good thing can consume you until you’re certain you won’t live through it. Most often, you do live through it only to be left with an anxiety you simply can’t shake. But sometimes, by the grace of God, you can learn to do that good thing again in the way you were designed to do it. And it can bless a whole lot of people. And you can do it with steadfastness and peace. Where do you need to surrender today? Where do you need to float?

Peace Floats
by Sarah Steele

I was lounging near the ocean
Watching swimmers and ships
Wondering what it’d be like
To feel free
In the water

I was wading in the ocean
Tickling calves with refreshing cool
Wondering what it’d be like
To have no fear
In the water

I was splashing in the ocean
Exuding joy with every bounce
Wondering what it’d be like
To be surrounded
By the water

I was swimming in the ocean
Gliding, stroke after stroke
Wondering what it’d be like
To live forever
In the water

I was racing through the ocean
Assuring I could speed forever
Wondering what it’d be like
To win a record
In the water

I was tiring in the ocean
Fearing the long glance back to shore
Wondering what it’d be like
To be lost
In the water

I was thrashing in the ocean
Kicking waves threatening to own
Wondering what it’d be like
To surrender
To the water

I was drowning in the ocean
Gulping water into collapsing lungs
Wondering what it’d be like
To die
In the water

I was sinking in the ocean
Falling gently through the dark
Wondering what it’d be like
To be one
With the water

I was rescued in the ocean
Shooting up with such great force
Wondering what it’d be like
To soar
Above the water

I was gasping near the ocean
Shivering with fright of death
Wondering what it’d be like
To have nightmares
Of the water

I was dying near the ocean
Drowning mind with anxious grief
Wondering what it’d be like
To even walk
Along the water

I was listening to the ocean
Coaxing calmly, drawing in
Wondering what it’d be like
To feel safe
In the water

I was stepping into the ocean
Quivering with fear and anticipation
Wondering what it’d be like
To feel release
Inside the water

I was floating in the ocean
Breathing in sky and rhythm
Not wondering what it’d be like
To live again
On land
